Injective Activates Meridian Upgrade as $1B in Mortgage Records Move Onchain

Injective has activated its Meridian mainnet upgrade, taking another step toward its goal of becoming infrastructure for regulated real-world assets. The upgrade introduces new tools for compliant tokenization and onchain markets just weeks after Pineapple Financial moved more than $1 billion worth of residential mortgage records onto the network.

The Meridian upgrade, approved through governance proposal IIP-701, moved Injective to version 1.20.4 after the network temporarily halted at the designated block height. The proposal received roughly 99% support from participating INJ stakers before activation.

Injective Targets Regulated Assets

The main purpose of Meridian is to make it easier for institutions to issue and trade tokenized real-world assets while incorporating compliance requirements directly into the assets.

The upgrade introduces regulated token standards on Injective’s EVM, allowing issuers to build transfer and compliance rules into tokenized products. It also brings unified markets across Injective’s native and EVM environments, creating infrastructure for tokenized equities, real-world assets and other financial products to be issued, traded and settled onchain.

For investors, this is important because Injective is competing in a market that could eventually connect traditional financial assets with blockchain-based settlement. But the technology itself does not guarantee adoption. The more important question is whether financial institutions and asset issuers actually use these new tools.

The $1 Billion Mortgage Test

Injective already has an example that could help answer that question.

Pineapple Financial has moved more than $1 billion in residential mortgage records onto Injective. The migration currently covers more than 2,000 mortgage records, with each record linked to an existing loan file and containing hundreds of data points for verification, audit trails and risk analysis.

Importantly, these are digital records of existing mortgages rather than newly created mortgage securities. The underlying loans remain within their existing legal and servicing structures.

Pineapple’s longer-term target is considerably larger. The company plans to migrate more than 29,000 funded mortgages representing more than $10 billion in value onto Injective over time.

That makes the mortgage project an important test of whether Injective can move beyond the idea of RWA tokenization and handle meaningful financial records onchain.

Why the RWA Narrative Matters for INJ

Real-world asset tokenization has become one of the major themes in blockchain development because it attempts to bring traditional assets such as stocks, credit, real estate and other financial instruments onto blockchain infrastructure.

Injective is positioning itself specifically around this market.

The network has already obtained SEC registration for an affiliated entity as a transfer agent, while its Injective Mint platform is designed to help institutions create and manage tokenized assets without building custom smart contracts from scratch.

Meridian adds another layer by putting regulated token standards directly into the network’s infrastructure.

If these tools attract more issuers, that could increase transaction activity and demand for the network’s infrastructure. For INJ holders, the potential benefit therefore depends less on the headline value of assets being tokenized and more on whether those assets generate meaningful activity on Injective.

Privacy Becomes Part of the Upgrade

Meridian also introduces early testing for private request-for-quote, or RFQ, transactions.

RFQ systems allow institutions to request prices from counterparties before executing trades. Adding privacy to that process could be useful for institutions that want access to onchain liquidity without exposing sensitive trading intentions or order information to the wider market.

The testing also lays groundwork for CypherOS, Injective’s planned privacy infrastructure.

This could become particularly relevant if institutional investors begin moving larger financial transactions onchain, where transparency and privacy need to coexist.

What Investors Should Watch

The Meridian activation gives INJ a new fundamental catalyst, but the next phase will be measured by adoption rather than the upgrade itself.

Investors should watch how quickly issuers begin using Meridian’s regulated token standards and whether new tokenized assets generate meaningful trading and settlement activity.

Pineapple’s planned expansion toward more than $10 billion in mortgage records will also be worth monitoring. A larger migration would provide a clearer indication of whether Injective can scale its RWA infrastructure beyond an initial proof of concept.

The performance of tokenized markets and private RFQ testing will provide another measure of institutional demand.

For INJ, the fundamental question is straightforward: can Injective turn its growing RWA infrastructure into sustained onchain activity?

The Meridian upgrade provides the technology. Pineapple’s $1 billion mortgage migration provides an early use case. The next stage is proving that institutions will continue to use the network at scale.
