Garlinghouse suggests that the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) needs to alter its regulatory approach in the United States regarding the crypto industry for a change in outcomes.
This statement follows three recent wins for Ripple against the SEC from July onwards. These victories encompass Judge Analisa Torres’ ruling that XRP is not inherently a security, the rejection of the regulator’s interlocutory appeal, and the complete dismissal, without prejudice, of charges against Ripple’s CEO and founder, Chris Larsen, related to facilitating XRP sales as investment contracts.
The CEO of Ripple remarked that certain industry events over the past year, such as Sam Bankman-Fried’s conviction, could contribute to the maturation of the crypto ecosystem. Garlinghouse emphasized that the issues faced by FTX Derivatives Exchange wouldn’t occur with Ripple, citing the company’s robust safeguards against such incidents.

When questioned about the market’s future amid the recent surge in Bitcoin (BTC) and XRP prices, Garlinghouse, while avoiding market speculation, suggested that the upcoming halving and potential approval of a spot Bitcoin ETF could attract significant capital to the industry.
The demand for a Bitcoin ETF is widespread, and numerous industry experts are weighing in on the potential timeline and likelihood of SEC approval. Galaxy Digital CEO, Mike Novogratz, anticipates SEC approval for the Bitcoin spot ETF this year. Meanwhile, Bloomberg ETF Analyst, James Seyffart, puts the odds of approval by January 10 at 90%.
