World’s First Bitcoin Banknote ATM Network Debuts in El Zonte, El Salvador

A groundbreaking development in the Bitcoin ecosystem is taking shape at Bitcoin Beach, El Zonte — the birthplace of El Salvador’s Bitcoin movement. The Satnotes El Zonte Experiment has officially announced the pilot launch of the world’s first physical Bitcoin banknote ATM network, signaling a bold step toward merging digital money with tangible currency.

The pilot will culminate in the first public dispensing of 500 “El Zonte Founding Edition” Satnotes, scheduled to begin at 00:01 local time on January 1, 2026. Each note is backed 1:1 by Bitcoin on-chain through the RSK DAO and secured using advanced cryptographic and physical protections, including dynamic 209-byte QR codes, color UV security strips, and Schnorr digital signatures.

A Smart ATM Built for Accessibility

At the center of this innovation is a locally engineered smart ATM, installed at Bitcoin Beach HQ. The device is designed to issue satoshi-denominated notes — ranging from 200 to 20,000 sats — providing a bridge between the digital and physical forms of Bitcoin.

Unlike conventional crypto ATMs, these Satnotes require no seed phrases, mobile devices, or internet access to function, and users can transact without fees on the device. The initiative aims to make Bitcoin more practical for everyday Salvadorans, especially in areas where digital literacy or mobile connectivity remains limited.

Community-Driven, Open-Source, and Legally Compliant

According to the project’s organizers, the El Zonte experiment is fully open-source, compliant with El Salvador’s Bitcoin Law, and funded through a live Geyser fundraiser, which runs until November 30, 2025. Printer manufacturing partners are currently being finalized under quotation, and a national franchise competition is open for Salvadoran ATM builders, with bid submissions due by November 15, 2025.

Empowering Local Innovation

Project lead John Kosanke described Satnotes as “the future of money — Bitcoin you can touch.” He emphasized that the pilot not only demonstrates a new financial instrument but also supports local economic participation.

Each of the initial 500 Satnotes will feature the names of early backers, while four top donors will be highlighted on the front of select notes as part of the commemorative “Founding Edition” series.

The pilot will also enable no-KYC deposits and withdrawals at local points within the community, maintaining accessibility and privacy under Salvadoran law. All code, hardware designs, and operational blueprints are publicly available on GitHub, reinforcing the initiative’s open-source ethos.

Exclusive to Salvadoran Applicants

Availability of the Satnotes and franchise rights for operating local ATMs will remain restricted to Salvadoran citizens and residents, in accordance with national regulations. The move ensures that the technological and financial benefits of this pioneering system stay within El Salvador — the first country to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender.

If successful, the El Zonte pilot could set a global precedent for hybrid crypto infrastructure, combining the trustless transparency of blockchain with the everyday usability of physical cash — a development that could redefine how Bitcoin is held, shared, and experienced in the real world.
