Amid mounting global concerns over the ongoing U.S.-China trade war, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed today that President Donald Trump remains hopeful about reaching a comprehensive trade agreement with Beijing, even as tariffs on Chinese imports continue to stand at a steep 145%.
Speaking during a press briefing, Leavitt emphasized the president’s determination to secure a deal that protects American interests while restoring balance in the economic relationship between the two world powers. “President Trump is optimistic,” she stated. “He has made it clear that he is open to a deal—but it has to be fair, enforceable, and beneficial to American workers and industries.”
The United States has maintained its aggressive tariff stance, citing long-standing issues of intellectual property theft, forced technology transfers, and trade imbalances. Despite the pressure, negotiations have continued behind the scenes, with officials revealing that over 15 proposals are currently being reviewed by both sides.
“The president wants to see concrete progress before the 90-day window expires,” Leavitt said, referring to the ongoing timeline for discussions agreed upon earlier this year. “If no substantial movement is made, he will not hesitate to take further action.”
Treasury Secretary officials are also actively monitoring the bond market and other key economic indicators to gauge investor sentiment and the broader financial implications of the standoff. A sharp rise in market volatility has already been attributed to uncertainty surrounding the trade talks, and analysts warn that a prolonged impasse could have far-reaching effects.

While details of the proposed offers remain confidential, sources close to the matter suggest that discussions have touched on lowering tariffs incrementally, improving market access, and implementing structural reforms in China’s trade practices.
With the 90-day deadline fast approaching, all eyes remain on Washington and Beijing to determine whether this high-stakes economic tug-of-war will end in reconciliation—or escalation.
