A scheduled meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy took an unexpected turn on Friday, escalating into a heated exchange. Zelenskyy raised concerns that the proposed agreement lacked clarity and omitted key provisions, though he acknowledged it as a step in the right direction.
Trump, who had expected the meeting to be a mere formality to finalize the deal, reacted with visible frustration. Publicly accusing Zelenskyy of being “disrespectful,” he abruptly canceled the planned signing ceremony.

At the heart of the dispute was Trump’s proposed “rare earths deal,” which sought access to Ukraine’s critical minerals in exchange for a defense pact. Zelenskyy ultimately rejected the offer, citing vague terms regarding U.S. commitments to securing Ukraine’s borders and ending Russia’s invasion.
Following Trump’s outburst, a White House official stated that he felt slighted by Zelenskyy’s remarks and demeanor but left the door open for a future signing, should Ukraine reconsider. However, with a more structured defense agreement from the European Union in exchange for industrial access to Ukraine’s rare earth resources, Kyiv appears unlikely to yield to U.S. demands.
